Whistler Weasel Workers plan `Weasel House` hospitality center

November 9, 2009
In February and March 2010, the Whistler Weasel Workers will set up and operate Weasel House, a private hospitality center available to fellow alpine race workers visiting Whistler as volunteers. After long hard days on the mountain, alpine race workers will gather at Weasel House to meet and socialize with fellow workers, race organizers and, on occasion, national team members.
This winter, race workers will converge on Whistler from throughout the skiing world. There will be Sled Dogs from Alberta, Sun Dogs from BC`s Okanagan, Marmots from Vancouver Island, Talon Crew from Colorado, and many others; a fraternity of race workers that sustains ski racing at all levels across North America and in many other countries. They will come together with Whistler Weasel Workers as VANOC volunteers. Weasel House will help generate the camaraderie that will bind the alpine race crew and extend the enthusiasm and sense of fraternity that has been the heart and soul of the Weasel Workers for so many years. As such, Weasel House will serve to strengthen the cause of alpine ski racing throughout the country.
The Whistler Weasel Workers have been active on Whistler`s ski racing scene since the very early 1970`s. With roots in the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, the Weasels became a separate organization focused on senior races, while leaving the ski club to focus on junior ski racing programs. Over the years, the Weasels have built and maintained the courses for all World Cup, National Championship and Nor-Am races held in Whistler. They have also developed international experience at Olympic, World Championship and World Cup races at Calgary, Salt Lake, Lake Louise, Beaver Creek, Bormio, Val d’ Isere, and Sierra Nevada. The Weasels will also serve as volunteers for Whistler`s Winter Olympic Games.
Weasel House is a major undertaking for the Weasel Workers. Success will be made possible through the support of many generous sponsors; sponsors who recognize the contribution of volunteer race workers to alpine ski racing and to the success of our Canadian Alpine Ski Team. Weasel house will be located on a site in Creekside that has been made available through the kindness of the Resort Municipality of Whistler. A Finnish sports clothier has provided a line of high quality winter apparel that the Weasel Workers are selling to help fund Weasel House. Other sponsors have stepped forward to provide cash donations and the many goods and services necessary to sustain a month of operation in February and another two weeks in March.
