Interior design trends are always changing and style is so subjective, you often find people recommending wildly different things! If you’re looking to update your home decor, we have put together a simple guide that will keep your home fresh and modern for a long time.

After speaking to experts, we’ve based this on modern design principles that will appeal to the widest audience. So, whether you’re looking to neutralize your home for a sale, or you’re looking to make some updates that you’ll love and will last the test of time, we’ve got some tips for you!

Keep it simple

Modern interior design means simplicity. It’s all about working with what you have and creating accents and features. Simple doesn’t mean it has to be boring though!

Property: 1553 Tynebridge Court                                                    Agent: Rob Palm

You may hear simple, modern design and think this means neutral colour palettes, and geometric shapes, but this can be anything but boring. Instead, modern design can be warm, inviting, and completely stylish.

Simple doesn’t mean the extreme of four walls and a chair, it is more an uncluttered look where everything has a purpose. Simple is the foundation from which you can build your design, utilizing a minimal colour palette and leveraging natural light.

A functional Approach

Functionality can vary from person to person, and will definitely change from room to room. The essence of modern design is to use a room for its intended purpose, while showcasing a sense of minimalism.

Property: 2932 Ancient Cedars Lane                                          Agent: John Ryan

An example of this sort of functionality is designing a kitchen which provides ample workroom and easy access to everything you need. Quality matters, and you should always be thinking about practicality when looking for furnishings.

Incorporating Technology

Technology is such a big part of our lives now that it must be taken into account when designing your home. Technology must be able to work within your space and it is recommended that everything be streamlined.

Property: 1777 Pinewood Drive                                           Agent: Dean Linnel

Think flat screen TVs within a functional space, and a dedicated area for computers/laptops so that they don’t end up being a “lump” in the room. It’s important to maintain those clean lines and minimal features.

Open Space

Open space is a huge aspect of modern design and creates a seamless feel to your home. This is accentuated by the use of natural light and the minimal functionality of every space.

Property: 3035 St. Anton Way                                                     Agent: Dave Burch

If your property has a lot of closed off rooms opposed to open concept, don’t worry! You can still create the feeling of openness by using colour, fabrics and furniture, while utilizing light windows coverings.

Adding Personality

This may all sound a bit too minimal and neutral for some, but it doesn’t have to be! The most important aspect of modern design is adding personality and character to your space.

Property: 9270 Emerald Drive                                                           Agent: Rob Palm

It can be amazing how a splash of colour to a neutral palette can bring out a room. Don’t hesitate to play around and let your personality shine through little features. These are the things that turn your property into a home.
