It’s only natural; after all, the event returns to Whistler once again on June 20 and 21, 2015—that’s less than a month away.
For the uninitiated, Tough Mudder is the ultimate obstacle course designed to test you in just about every way possible. Participants register in teams, helping one another (and other teams) as they tackle steep hills, frigid waters, thick mud, and plenty of unforgiving man-made obstacles along the way.
It’s not a race, per se – if you’re able to finish the course, you’re considered a winner. More than anything, it’s a personal challenge. As with all challenges it’s not easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding.
Here’s how to get ready for the big event over the next few weeks. Not participating? Not to worry, we’ve got tips on how you can be someone’s #1 cheerleader on Tough Mudder weekend.
Hopefully, by now you are already in pretty good shape. If not, now would be a good time to start thinking about hitting the gym. The challenge is that Tough Mudder isn’t all one discipline. You need to have strength, endurance, agility, and good cardio to tackle everything. Unfortunately, you can’t go from zero to sixty in all of these areas in three weeks. But you can give yourself a little boost by incorporating running, weight training, and yoga into your regimen over the next few weeks. Consider checking out a circuit class which tackles a little bit of everything.
On your rest days, you’ll want to sort out the logistics of the Tough Mudder weekend. Touch base with your teammates to ensure that everyone is on the same page. If you haven’t already sorted out accommodations, you’d better get on it! It’s a busy weekend in town and if you have an early start time, you don’t want to have to make the extra early drive.
It doesn’t hurt to plan out the rest of your time in Whistler ahead of schedule. Making dinner reservations is a good idea as you’ll no doubt be starving and won’t want to wait in line, especially as the Village will be packed. You might also consider checking out the restaurants in Creekside, which are less likely to be crowded.
Remember, Tough Mudder isn’t just about the physical, it’s a mental challenge too. Assemble a pump-up playlist to listen to before the start of the event, and watch a few TED Talks to help you remember that you can do anything!
For Fans, Supporters, and Cheerleaders
Your favourite Tough Mudder is lucky to have you, and you’re in for a fun weekend!
First, ensure that you have bought your spectator ticket, which will grant you access to the venue and will allow you to watch all of the action unfold. Pick up your ticket now for $20, or pay $40 on site the day of the event.
You’ll definitely want to prepare some cheer gear for your favourite participants. We recommend customized t-shirts and handmade posters. It’s also a good idea to start practicing your cheers.
Assist your Tough Mudder by carrying their stuff, including snacks and a change of clothes. They will likely be very cold and wet by the end of the race—you will be their lifesaver.
Remember, under absolutely no conditions are you allowed to bail on your buddies. No matter how early their heat is, no matter what conditions are like, they need your support!
Finally, if you want to make a best friend for life, offer massages and foot rubs post-race. Your Tough Mudder will be forever indebted to you—and they might even buy your dinner!
