The Red Bull 400, which sees competitors race up a 400m ski jump, is taking place on July 19 at the Whistler Olympic Park in Callaghan.
Don’t be fooled by the relatively short distance, the race is incredibly tough and will test the endurance and speed of all those taking part. It is practically vertical all the way and the racing will mainly be done on all fours!
As well as the full distance there will also be a coed 4×100 relay and a relay race for fire-fighters/police/EMS.
Runners will first be tested with a qualifying race, placing them in the final heats. From these qualifiers, athletes will move forward to compete in the full distance. Joining competitors will be ultra-marathon runner, Ryan Sandes, who will no doubt be up for this new challenge.
The race is taking place at the Olympic Park, located in the Callaghan Valley, just south of Whistler.
This was the site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and is currently an active centre for world-class athletes, as well as preserving the Olympic legacy. During the winter months the site is home to cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and ski jumping to name a few.
During the summer months it is a popular tourist spot along with biathlon venue. Callaghan is also a well known area for bear viewing, which is always exciting!
