Whistler Realtor Q&A: Dave Burch

Dave Burch

Q: Why did you move to Whistler?

A: I finished university in Ontario and was travelling to Australia to bike down the East Coast. Before that I had the opportunity to drive across Canada, and found myself in Whistler in September 1997. I mountain biked on some amazing trails, and discovered that Whistler was an incredible place.

When I got back from Australia I decided that I wanted to move back to Whistler, so I got a job teaching skiing and moved back. After staying for the spring and summer I moved back to Ontario in order to start a career, however, this happened to be the incredible snow year of 98/99! I decided that was enough and I should follow my heart and moved back to Whistler!

Q: When did you get into real estate?

A: After about five years of living in Whistler I bought a condo and decided to rent it out. That got me into rental management as a licensed rental manager. After a while I realised that I wanted something a bit more. It was a tough decision making the leap to real estate and leaving everything I’d grown, but once I did it I never looked back!

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to buy in Whistler?

A: Whistler is evolving and changing all the time, but the core of Whistler remains. A community of people who are excited and energetic, and stoked on being here. And if that’s what you have fallen in love with, then that is to me what makes this place great!

Q: What’s your favourite thing about working with your clients?

A: I love a relationship that grows, prospers and is mutually beneficial. Making a client happy is what makes me happy. I’m constantly stoked when I can work together with someone to achieve their goals.

One of the best feelings is welcoming new people to the community!

Q: How do you decompress, or how would you spend your ideal day?

A: Every day in Whistler can be what you make it. Living here you don’t really notice the difference between work days and holidays. My ideal day is a morning with my kids, working, meeting clients, selling Whistler, and maybe fitting in a mountain bike ride before hanging out with my family.

Q: What was it like raising a family in Whistler?

A: It’s pretty amazing in terms of opportunities for the kids. This is also greatly beneficial for the parents as there is so much to do. The hardest part is deciding which program you are going to put your kids in!

The flip side is that it is a vacation resort community and you still want to provide a “real life” experience. But when you weigh it all together it’s healthy here, outdoor focussed, and the arts and education community are all available. Whistler really does offer so much for a small town.

Q: What makes you smile the most?

A: My kids!

Q: What do you think you would be if you weren’t a Realtor?

A: That’s a hard one. I think I might be something that is more in line with my education. Perhaps something in physiotherapy, or in a business related to health sciences.

Q: What accomplishment do you consider to be the most significant in your life?

A: I would say following my passion, and being able to create an incredible life and family, in an amazing community. I feel fortunate everyday for that.

Q: Finally, in one sentence, why should people come to live here?

A: The most important thing is not just the mountains, the resort, the entertainment, and show; it’s the people, the enthusiasm, and the community that make it all so great.
